Feb. 14--If you're on your back and turning blue, you want a man like Johnathon McClellan kneeling over you.

At over 6-feet-3 with plenty of muscle, McClellan, a Minneapolis firefighter, has the endurance and training to do chest compressions all the way to the hospital.

"You don't want to give up. You're praying, hoping that this person opens up their eyes," he said. "I've lost some; I've brought some back."

Budget cuts. These words have become an integral part of the daily lives of most fire service leaders. As many municipalities, both big and small, are forced to deal with declining revenues and shrinking financial reserves, they are left with little choice but to cut into all aspects of municipal operations, including public safety. This seems to inevitably set off a chain of events that ultimately leads to the use of the ubiquitous yet equally aggravating phrase: "They are asking us to do more with less."

LAS VEGAS

Las Vegas Valley firefighters practiced for this year's Firefighter's Tower Run Wednesday.

They have to run up 108 stories of the Stratosphere, which is more than 1,400 stairs.

The run is to raise money for the Firefighters of Southern Nevada Burn Foundation. It will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

With apologies to famed country singer Willie Nelson, I am here to announce that come June of 2010, I will be on the road again. Yes, once again it is time to announce another Harry Carter Road Trip. It is my intention to hit the road on or about June 1, 2010. June is normally my quiet month between band seasons. However, it is my desire to be back in time for the outdoor summer band season with famed Ocean Grove Summer Band, in Ocean Grove, NJ.

Like most of you, we are angry about the proposed cuts to so many fire departments...it's like some don't get it...or don't want to get it. There are even communities with volunteer fire department's that are making cuts! WTF?
