Springfield, MA, firefighters battled a blaze under frigid conditions on March 9, 2005. A stove left unattended on the second floor caused the fire that left two families homeless. High winds complicated suppression efforts with one exposure less than 20 feet away. Firefighters under the command of District Chief Philip Costello were able to contain the flames to the original structure. No injuries reported. The fire caused $200,000 damage to the two-family home.
