Twenty-four people were left homeless after a two-alarm fire ripped through a three-story wood-frame building. Seven engines, three ladders and a rescue responded to the mid-afternoon blaze in Manchester, NH, on Aug. 31, 1999.
The fire started in a second-floor apartment and extended to the exterior. The fire then worked its way into the attic and through the roof. One firefighter was injured in the blaze.

This month's Firehouse® is dedicated to Firefighter Brian Lee, 38, of the Jersey City, NJ, Fire Department; Chief Fred Broussard, 69, of the Maurice, LA, Volunteer Fire Department; Fire Police Officer Walter Vaughan, 80, of the Warminster, PA, Fire Department; Firefighter William Korte, 59, of the Southampton, NY, Fire Department; and Assistant Chief Wayne Yost, 48, of the Cochranville, PA, Fire Company, who died in the line of duty, November 1999.
