On This Month's Cover:

Firefighters from the Los Padres National Forest Service in California, along with numerous other agencies, battled a major brush and forest fire along Highway 33 in the Sespe Watershed area of the forest, 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The fire started on June 1, 2002, and soon blackened over 6,000 acres and destroyed several outbuildings. This fire, named the “The Wolf Incident,” was being fought by over 1,200 personnel, seven bulldozers, 42 crews and 42 engine companies in steep, rugged terrain. Firefighters were aided by 19 aircraft (six air tankers and 13 helicopters.)
