January 92 cover

On This Month's Cover:

The last oil-well fire in Kuwait was extinguished eight months after retreating Iraqi forces set most of the country's wells ablaze. Thanks to the efforts of 9,000 firefighters and support personnel from over 40 countries, all 732 oil-wells sabotaged by the Iraqis were extinguished two years before schedule. A Hungarian invention, the "Desert Dragon" consisting of two modified MiG-21 jet engines mounted on a T-35 tank, proved crucial in this firefighting effort. The jets were modified to blow water and chemicals with a combined thrust of 16 tons. Fires were put out in seconds and wells cooled in minutes.
